I have a 2005 X5 3.0 Sport with Assist. Now at 7000 miles.

My red light went on several months ago, indicating Assist not functioning. The dealer replaced the circuit board in the Assist unit in the rear (behind the spare tire!), and all was OK - for three months. Then, one day, went out to garage to start the car, and battery was DEAD. Got the BMW tow to the dealer, and they tested all circuits for 3 days. Finally isolated a short in the, guess what, assist circuit board. They also had received a TSB that a certain "run" of the boards were susceptible to low temperature spikes. They changed the board a second time, and the thing has been fine since. I suggest you ask your dealer to check out the no. on your board. It may be one of those "bad" ones. All done under warranty, and they gave me a loaner X5 while my car was in the shop.

I do notice, however, that the red light comes on occasionally - for a minute, or so, then as the car moves a few yards, light goes off. It's the same as with your cell phone, where in certain areas the signal is poor. This appears normal.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
