Subject: Transmission Sensor? Diagnosis?

Well I started the dreaded tear down of my transmission. It has been in the garage for about 5 months.

Symptoms:
1. Lost 4th gear all together (acts like neutral).
2. Slippage in 3rd gear

Actions:
Dropped pan expecting to find a big mess but to my surprise, every thing looked GREAT. Even better than you would expect at regular service interval.

Findings:
In the bottom of the pan, I found a few small pieces of white plastic. After close inspection, the plug in the electrical connection at the very back of the trans was where the pieces came from. I pulled the plug and found there is a sensor there that SHOULD be pushed in tight and held with the broken plastic pieces I found. The sensor was quite loose. See the pics.

Sensor:

Question:
Anyone know what this sensor is? Might it cause the kind of symptons above if it were loose?

Wiring Harness:
http://genuinezfparts.com/index.php?p=product&id=14&parent=11 has a picture of the harness. It is the plug with the two brown wires (ground/earth?). The plug connections are fine. The plastic is used to mate to a bracket which holds the sensor / selonoid into the hole. The part number is 1043 227 016 but I haven't found a price from anyone yet.

It sure would be nice if I just needed a new connector and back on the road! Was dreading pulling the trans and doing my first rebuild.
