label calls out for? All 3 of my '92 535i 5 speeds called out ATF; just as Shane said in his post that most likely this is in yours. HOWEVER, as Shane wrote, it depends what that transmission calls out on the label as to whether you use ATF or gear oil.

As for ATF, ALL newer ATF fluids are synthetic; i.e. Mobil 1, Dexron VI or Mercon V; older stuff is not; i.e. Dexron II or III & I'm not sure about Mercon

TIP....be sure to remove the FILL plug 1st. If you should drain your tranny BEFORE removing the fill plug, you may find out after the fact that you can’t get the fill plug lose & you are in a bad situation with no fluid in the tranny & no way to put new in. If you remove the fill plug 1st, then just put your finger in to see what the fluid looks like that’s already in there. This is what Shane is suggesting, just to make sure you use the correct fluid.

Typically, 75W90 gear oil is for the Differential Fluid

The rattle you hear when shutting off the engine is the clutch rattling, not the transmission. This is pretty common.
