Subject: Need help with shifter issues on E46

I am having some issues with my shifter in my 2001 325i. I am extremely anal and these may not be issues at all, but regardless they have really started to bother me lately! The first issue is that it seems like there is a lot of excess play in the stick. When in gear or in neutral, I seem to be able to move the stick around in a circular motion more that should be allowed. In other 3 series i've driven and remembering back to when it was new, I seem to remember it being very tight with little to no play. I took it in a year or two ago when it was under warranty but they told me there was nothing wrong with it. Since then the level of play has increased.

The second issue might or might not be related. I have noticed lately that the "springyness" in the sick is far less than what it used to be, and at some times sticks to where there is no "springyness" at all when going from neutral to the right (to shift to 5th). I define "springyness" as the resistance against being able to move the stick to the right or left from neutral; the force pushing the stick back to center neutral from wherever it is. I noticed the decrease some time ago, but over time it has beome less and less crisp.

I'm faily handy and peform many maintenance tasks and don't mind a bit of a challenge. Looks like this weekend I'll need to replace a window regulator, so if I can tackle this shifter issue at the same time, i'd like to take care of that as well.

Your help and advice is very much appreciated!

Thanks!
Ryan
