I did get a message from Jochen(kiwi)last night and he said that a lot of these problems are traced to a bad ground and suggested I ground the interface straight to the body of the car as opposed to tapping into a ground wire from the cars electronics.

Its too dang cold to go out and mess with this right now so I'll try and do it within the next couple of days.
