Thanks for your reply. The car is working fine and my friend is happy with his "restored" engine. it's kind of funny how BMW engines are made so well but the little ancillary parts (many of them of questionable quality) can cause a huge difference in performance. Anyway, it makes it a pretty fun and easy car to service yourself and I prefer this to replacing a thrust bearing on a FWD Japanese car.
