Subject: Weird noise on 94' 325i

I had a noise that started out as a crackling type of sound on my 94' 325i. It has turned into something that is heard when accelerating or stopped at a light. It can be heard from gears 1-3 quite plainly. On the freeway, it makes a minor thunk, like when you drive over uneven pavement connections - thunks every 1/2 second or so. The noise sounds like it's coming from somewhere between under the shifter (auto tranny) and the center console dashboard (engine area).

The weird thing is, it'll do it if I'm stopped (in gear) or in park. When I put it into neutral, it doesn't do it at all. There is absolutely no performance hit or lag at all.

This leads me to believe it may be a problem with the driveshaft.... Can anybody shed some light on this? I want to know what to suggest or describe when I take it into my mechanic.
