you were looking...as you said...behind the CD changer.

At least, that's where it is located here in the States. But it looks like you may be from Australia...if so, what type of head unit do you have? (pics) You may have different radio (head) units than we do...and perhaps your car doesn't have an amp in the rear. But if it is anything like the e39s imported to the USA...the amp is behind the CDC.

And if you go to www.youtube.com and do a search for iPod or DICE install in BMW e39 ...you should easily find the many videos that have been uploaded that show the amps location as wokr is performed installing/upgrading the audio systems of e39s.
