hi Rajaie, 4th June 2010

Many thanks for your detailed and speedy response to my query it is much appreciated and you have outlined some good points which are all probably contributing to my poor running. I think that these need addressing before the expense and work of the vanos unit overhaul. Which will no doubt come after at some stage.

I often use the train for commuting to work so of course the problem has no doubt been developing un-noticed for some time specially over the very bad winter we had this last year when I hardly used the car for some time and these days hardly ever give the car some welly to make it go fast. It used to give a real shove in the back when really giving it some welly/ stick, however what with the great influx of government speed cameras and subsequent driving licence endorsements introduced over the last few years in the UK there is nowhere safe and it is no longer a joy to drive without fear anywhere, BIG Brother is here

They are supposed to be to slow down traffic and solve safety issues but in real terms most have been positioned just to generate revenue for the labour government.

I have noticed though for some months that the mpg was down on a normal run I used to do consistently at 30mpg, it had gone down to 25-27mpg so in fact 10 to 15%, I never really noticed performance down though come to think about it, the performance probably was down too.

You are confirming my earliest thoughts that it was a vacuum leak because I felt the car labouring on hills and pick up slow etc, which are classic indications of poor or non ignition advance. In the old days of cars with points, plugs, distributor caps, ht leads ,coils, vacuum pipes, brake servo hoses, you could give these a clean up or replace, rotate or change distributor to set the timing and the problem was resolved fairly easily, and is much more complicated these days.

I hope to get the car in on the 16th June with someone else to review and check fully but may have a look at some of the items you suggested in the meantime to see if easily resolved. In the meantime I have put in a fuel injection and system cleaner and hope that cleans out some of the crap.

I do very much appreciate your's and anyone else's support and will let you know the outcome.
with kind regards and thanks Patrick
