Jim,

The X5 is an overall great vehicle as far as body and interior go. The 4.4l Engine has many known issues. We have rebuilt several at Auto Sports Unlimited - European Used & Remanufactured Parts I would HIGHLY recommend not going with the 4.4l engine, I believe BMW offers a 3.0l FROM 04-06 and a 4.8l from 07 up. The most common transmission in the newer X5's is the ZF6HP26 which is a 6 speed automatic trans. Those are pretty reliable, the 5hp24's are junk, but I think they phased these out in 04. In general the X5's seem to be a money pit if they are not maintained well. I love Bimmers and have had many myself, but the X5 is a nice ride, but very expensive to maintain and seems to have many drivetrain issues I would rather not deal with. I would look into other SUV options. But it all comes down to the real boss, your wife. Just kidding. Good luck Jim!
