I had an E23 (1983 735i) and the OEM Bosch fuel pump lasts past 150K miles when I sold the car.

From reading different forums, the OEM fuel pump, if not abused, will last some 180-250K miles.

How do you abuse a fuel pump?
- Run the gas tank dry (less than 1/8 of the tank). Fill it up as soon as the needle shows 1/4 empty.
- Fill the tank with contaminated fuel (contaminated water).
- Clogged Fuel Filter creates so much friction that the fuel pump works so hard to push through.

As long as you don't abuse the fuel pump, it should last a long time.

On the other hand, if you have more than 100K, it is not a bad idea to change the fuel relay. Keep the old relay in the trunk just in case. The fuel relay controls fuel pump and can potentially cause driveability or even stalling ---> accidents etc. So for safety sake and your peace of mind sake, a new relay is not a bad idea at your mileage.

It is standard 5-prong relay made by either Bosch or Siemens. About $12 online. Check your relay and get a new one from dealer.

PS: If you decide not to change the relay, then carry a spare relay in the glovebox for long trip.
