1995 bmw 5251 114k I was driving about 45mph and heard a loud crunch coming from the rear of the car, car kept driving fine however my gas gauge quit working .long story short had my mechanic put it on a lift to see what was wrong and the gas tank litterly shrunk in half it pulled away from the straps that held it in place and crushed the sending unit in the tank.there are no gas odors the car runs and drives fine(I ve put 1000 miles on it) however it only holds 11 gallons of gas now. when he opened up the gas cap there was loud wooosh of air of pressure escaping. what caused this? we looked for a crimp in the line but to no avail.
has this happened to any one else and what can I do to avoid this happening again.
thanks
