the other is the compressor seal. so if the compressor /compressor pulley area shows signs of oil... the compressor seal is shot, and imho, you are in for a new pump again imho, don't use a rebuilt cause the old cases are worn and don't last long...

Next question R12 or 134A hmmm lots of opinions here... but you can only find 134a pumps these days, but I'd certainly consider charging it with a r-12 substitute such as Frost King or Freeze 12 .. lots of scare stories out there about the flammability of substitutes, lots of it is old stuff or hyped to sell their product.. basically they show the "freon burning', but actually it is the oil mist in the spray that is burning. FWIW.. you can throw a burning rag into a can of jet fuel, but it will not flash, but make it a fine mist.. and yes.. it burns quite nicely thank you.

Remember, the 134a evap valve is different than the r12, there are different seals and also the differential pressures of operation are different. 134a operates at a much higher pressure than r12
