Subject: Update on the 320i

Well,

A long story and MONTHS later I'm not too happy with Motorwerks, but I finally got the in-tank pickup pump for the 320i

I went and opened the box and low and behold what do I find but the wrong pump! Well, it turns out that at least THIS part was not the fault of Motorwerks but the fuel pump in the car was actually for a 1980+ 320i!!! ARGH

So now I'm really confused since the car body is a 1977, but the pump has two connectors that are more like the E30's and not even remotely like a 1977 so I'm wondering if when the engine was replaced (with a who knows what year with shaved head and timing advance) that the guy who did it replaced the wiring for it to make it for the later models.

I know the guy and he used to race BMW's and do a lot of hot rodding so it might be possible. There's a lot of different bits and part that oyu can swap through all of the years of the E21's and even with the '02's so at this point, I just have no idea. I know it did run, and quite well, with the old pump so I will be have to get one of the 80+ fuel pumps. This may also explain why the fuel gauge was 1/4+ tank off (and left me on the side of the road once because of it). The sending unit that was in there may not actually be bad afterall.

I will have to go back and double check the numbers on the engine and the body vin but man that was confusing. Also, quite crappy since the fuel pump + sender WAS one single unit costing $213 + tax and change, whereas the new PUMP ONLY is $299, and the fuel sender is $170........ CRAP. Looks like I might be checking out BAV auto and a bunch of other places.

Also, the 318i is fully ripped apart and I picked up a M42 engine from another board member with a 318ti. Just need the rods from that with the OBD1 bits for the conversion, do the rebuild find the M47 crank and I'll be almost ready to finish out the swap!

Let's see if my new sig shows up correctly.
