Have replaced fuel pumps in three E34's. A '90 535 Dinan, '92 535 & 95 525. Never had trouble with the regulator just the fuel pump, one way return valve between the pump & banjo out put hose fitting, filter and injectors themselves. Speculating if the regulator was defective pressure at the rail would drop way off w/o resistance. I use an external canister OTC fuel injector cleaner to hook into the system to clean injectors and check the regulator with it's gauges. Haven't looked at the web site you typed in as it wouldn't come up but I suppose there is a way to take a regulator off & check it. Just guessing but I assume a regulator fails totally when it does so I would run a vacuum to it and see what air does introduced where fuel normally runs thru. Change the fuel filter first before you do anything. Suprises you how often its stopped up! Good luck.
