In general, if you remove the steering wheel without disconnecting the battery, you will have the airbag warning light on. And for that there is no trick to reset it like the oil service light with a wire, for that a special airbag reset tool is required to reset the stored fault(s).
I am selling these reset tools,Airbag / SRS Light/Service/Oil Reset Tool - all in 1 tool
http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/754798/

but try to avoid that problem and save the money, the dealer of course can also reset, but that costs you $$ and you still do not have your own reset tool.

How to remove the steering wheel:
1. Disconnect the positive at the battery. And make sure your wheels are straight

2. There are 2 screws in the back of the wheel. At about 3 and 9 o'clock. Do not try to remove them from the back of the wheel. All they do is hold the airbag in, when they are both unscrewed the airbag should pull out

3. Unplug the airbag and set it aside

4. Now you will see a very large bolt in the center. Making sure NOT to turn the wheel from its straight position, and proceed to remove the bolt.

5. Pull the wheel straight out, be careful there is another plug that you need to unplug, so don't pull to hard and damage the wire.

6. Now there should just be a post sticking out. Put the new wheel adapter on and make sure the bolt holes for the new wheel will line up so the wheel is straight.

7. Put the big bolt back on and tighten it; it is ok if the post rotates now

8. If you wish to use your horn, follow the directions in the box, there are different methods based on what brand the wheel is.

9. Bolt your new wheel on and you’re ready to go
