Very interesting observation from Webhorn and Henrik. Thanks for sharing!
I am not aware of a relationship between vanos seals replacement and oil sludge in the crankcase vent system. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a relationship.
Replacing the vanos seals repairs the vanos and variable valve timing system. This allows the engine to run at optimal performance. With the failed seals the engine is handicapped and is functioning with the wrong timing. The outcome of this might translate to sludge in the CCV system. I can't explain why this would happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did and there is a plausible explanation for it.

Maybe Webhorn and Henrik you two could investigate this some in your respective BMW forums. You live in a cold climate area and would have a better chance engaging with owners in such an environment.
I can also try to get more info on this, especially in the US.

Thanks very much for your super observations!
