Hello all,

This is the first time I've posted here. I've been looking to buy an 8 for a while now - read through most of this forum and the linked sites / wuffer manuals and a lot of contradictory reviews on the web.

I have seen some very decent 1996/7 840ci 4.4 steptronics.
I've also seen some much older (but similar mileage) 850i's.

The consensus on the web reviews seems to be that the late model 840ci is a better bet. But one comment that threw me off was that the M70 / 73 is a much tougher engine, while the M62 is more prone to problems, but easier to fix when they crop up. what the...? Very interested to hear from other's experiences in this department, particularly since I was turned off looking for a CSI because I worried about sourcing parts for the S70 engine. I'm guessing we'd all drive a CSI or Alpina given the choice - but which 8 is kindest (relatively speaking) in terms of maintenance? And how's the drive compared to the higher running cost brethren? (Drive being highway / sensible driving, not racing)

One last thing - which models had the rear sun blind as standard? It seems the USA models didn't, but I've seen a mixed bag here in Australia, some with, some without. How can one be sure (without seeing the centre console to check for the switch)
