Yes, the O2 sensor readings were just adaptation limit codes.

Would you expect to see similar crankcase vent valve failures on single vanos cars such as mine (96 328i)? I tried the plastic bag thing with a plastic grocery bag and it got sucked pretty far into the oil fill hole although the thinness of the plastic probably has a lot to do with how far in the bag gets sucked.

Two further questions -- if it is a bad crankcase vent valve, is it a bad idea to drive the car for a couple days until the new valve comes in? Also, do you know if the intake manifold has to be removed to replace the crankcase vent valve? If so, I may just have a mechanic finish this job as that's getting a little beyond my comfort level/available time.
