the fix involves resoldering all of the pin connector joints on the cluster board. You know the ones that the wire connections go to. With time, vibration and heat cycling will take its toll on the board by breaking the solder joints at the pins. If you look closely at a broken solder joint, it will have a faint circle around the pin in the solder.

I've done a couple of main boards that displayed similar problems as yours including dead Speedo and tach. To do a complete job you'll need to detach all of the gauges, including the temp and fuel gauges. And then go over every pin joint with a magnifying glass. I use two pairs of reading glasses.

It's not a complex job but you should definitely practice and test your soldering skills on something other than what you want to fix.

While you're there replacing the NiCad’s is a good idea.
