My conclusion, K & N for a racing engine is perfect, but then who cares about dirt passed, racing engines are rebuilt every season.

For a average daily driver modified or not, the paper element wins outright.

As for any CAI (Cold Air Intake) arguments, the factory install on any BMW is already a CAI

I mentioned before engineering is always a compromise between this and that. German engineers do enough research that they compromise very well, it's these compromises that make their cars so complex. They will always add that extra device or goodie that makes any engineering compromise work 100%. I have very seldom modified a BMW sucsessfully, other cars yes, but BMW cars get it right out of the box, it's why I like them.
