That explains what you are doing

Unless you know the electrical system do not "assume" anything. Although it is no longer modern car it is also significantly different than previous models.

Almost every function on the car is computer controlled (many different modules) and they all have software and communicate with each other across digital communication buses.

All exterior lighting is controlled by a module (LCM) and it controls each lamp individually - there are no fuses.

Almost everything that is controlled by a switch (light switch) is actually controlled by a module which takes its inputs from the switch by various ground leads (sometimes a combination of grounded leads to save wiring)

The scary part of the situation you have is whether the wiring has been chewed in other parts of the car - that can be a nightmare.

A BMW service centre can read error codes for every module in the car - an OBD reader is only for the engine and emissions.

Also - the specific production date is often necessary when ordering parts. Sometimes parts will change month by month - especially in that time frame. The production month can be determined if one knows the VIN #

Best of luck

Jim Cash
