Those are among the worst quality issues with regard to late-model BMW's.

Overhead valve technology has a few advantages: cheaper to make, generally easier to service, torque usually comes on sooner at lower rpm's.

However, these advantages are also against some notable shortcomings: more noise, more frictional losses from the valvetrain, as well as inefficiencies built into the block and head necessitated by having a lifter-based valve system. It's also more difficult to create multi-valve and direct injection fuel systems due to these disadvantages.

Engine technology is going forward, not backward, and this is but one example of GM's struggle to keep up with its competitors. Ford started phasing out its OHV V8's in the 1990's, ironically being the only American manufacturer to do so, and not so coincidentally, the only American automaker that wasn't dependent on a bailout for its survival.
