I am also from the UK and the original post sums up my own feelings about this perfectly. I have a '98 528 and I'm going to feel like a right idiot if I mess up something that isn't obviously broken (although I recognise that the seals may be shot). My car has done 110K miles by the way.

I'm OK with the basic dismantling and reassembly, but I really don't fully understand what's going on with the removal of the exhaust sprocket bolts, the subsequent movements of the sprocket and the insertion of the vanos (after repair). I feel that until I fully understand this part, I should not proceed. Any clarification would be appreciated.

One other thing: Rajaie, you mention in several places that the CVV is a four hose assy. It appears that certain versions of the 528 have only a two hose CVV, like mine. Realoem appears to confirm this. Any comments on vacuum failures on these types of CVV? Thanks
