Long story short, my father-in-law's 1981 528iA (that's an E12 for you younger viewers) is inbound from northern California. He passed away a little over a year ago and the car has been collecting UV damage and cobwebs.

Indeed, the car hadn't been driven in a while at the time he passed. A strong Optima blue-top, some oil pressure priming, and the freshly rebuilt 3.5L lit off like it had been driven yesterday morning. The transmission, brakes and steering all still work very well.

The car needs almost everything cosmetic: the paint is California-burned but the body is straight (what rust?); the dash, though perfect when we bought the car 10 years ago, is crack city; the lenses are faded and the park bench bumpers are dull.

But so what? As I like to tell people, if you start with a straight, rust-free car, the rest is replaceable.

It lands in a couple of weeks. New (old) toy!
