No 1 is the age/mileage of the timing belt. 40-60,000 miles MAXIMUM. It is an interference engine and when the belt breaks so do other engine pieces.

#2 how is it now as far as driving? We'll need to fix that stuff to make it safe.

#3 the Check light comes on at start-up and goes off when the brakes are used. This checking the brake light bulbs. If any other overhead red lights are on, then that situation needs to be addressed, but you can cancel the check light with the button overhead.

#4 the inspection, oil service and gree-yellow-red dash light bar is the service indicator. Reset by jumping two connections of the diagnostic connector underhood. If this fails, need new batteries installed or just pull out the batteries in there and live without the unit.

#5 the button by your right knee on the under steering wheel panel is the window circuit breaker. Check it and make sure it is in.

#6 the heat is controlled by sensor sucking in air at the hood release and uses a solenoid valve to control flow or hot coolant. solenoid usually fails annually or biannually, 25 bucks, 4 screws, one electrical connector and 15 min repair.

#7 E38 wheels will fit, but there may be rubbing issues. Shawn D has a spread sheet for the fitments with tires. I'll try to find it.

#8 do some homework. Read the section over there----> at the top of the menu for related links. The Owner's manual for the E23 735 (bottom of the left column) will tell you one heck of a lot about your car, different engine, but controls are similar. Skip the HVAC system yours is good the E23 unit is too advanced for its time.

#9 the brake lining light is controlled by sensors at the left front and right rear. When the sensor attached to the pad is worn enough to allow the wire in it to touch the rotor, a circuit is completed and the light comes on. At first it is just a flash when you break, then it is constant. Later on the brakes get noisy and the light stays on while the pads lose all friction material and the backing plate starts scoring the rotors. Rotors are a use once item so this is no big deal really.

#10 bring back any questions in a new post one question each and we'll get you through this.

Get the Bentley 5-Series repair manual for the 528, 533, 535 82-88 if you want to work on the car yourself. It is very easy to do and rewarding.

Your turn.
