I restored a 1986 735i e23 last year and it was loads of fun for myself and my wife. We're more attached to that car than any car we've ever owned because of the experience. The e23 and your e28 share a lot of technology (including the same engine and suspension), so take a look at the link above and see what you can use.

Since you are an e38 owner, I assume you already know about e38.org, but take a look at a subpage on that site for the e23 (it has a lot of e28 info, too):
www.e38.org/e23/

The flashing "CHECK" light comes on automatically each time you start the car. It should go out as soon as you touch the brake pedal.

The Inspection lights can be reset with a piece of wire.

The "brake liner" light means that the pads are worn down and need to be replaced. See
changing the front rotors and pads and
changing the rear rotors and pads. Both procedures should be the same on your car, too.

If the problem with the power windows is for all of the windows, it could the switches or a fuse. Also check the window lockout button to make sure it's not activated (I guess e28's have them -- the e23 does).

Keep us informed as you work and feel free to ask questions! BTW, please think about documenting your work with a digital camera and post writeups here to help build the archive.
