After trying things like contact, PVA, cascamite, negative and positive moulds, ironing, steaming etc nothing worked.

At the end of the day I wet the veneer to soften it, let it dry a little till damp and used good old superglue (about eight big bottles in all)

I wet the surface completely with superglue and then quickly clamped the part and veneer against a thick piece of high density neoprene foam rubber, this gave a very impressive bond and flat surface.

I then put a small 45 Deg cut in each corner with an exacto knife, and glued the edges one by one using a hot air gun and pressure against a flat surface to get the glue to stick, I finished off with the corners. (The cuts dissapear totally when the wood is sanded)

Superglue sticks veneer forever if the surfaces are clean, my test piece, the bond is stronger than the wood, though I must admit I never want to see or smell superglue ever again after this.

BTW the solvent for superglue is acetone, and I had a bottle right by me the whole time.
