Subject: I realize I treat American automakers like some punching bag...

... but I am genuinely worried about the future of the American auto industry this time. On one hand, I do agree with the government's concern that if the government allows the auto industry to get a cut of the mortgage industry bailout, it would start a line from other industries looking for a handout also. On the other hand, I also believe in the jobs the American auto industry creates, and that having an American auto industry keeps the spirit of competition (good for consumers, innovation, and keeps prices low).

While I still believe BMW's are among the best engineered cars in the world, SOMEBODY needs to keep the Europeans on their toes, and it aint' the Japanese, Koreans, or the Chinese who (in my opinion) who are equipped to fill that role!

Anybody open for suggestions? I don't know about you, but while I believe the auto industry created this problem from years of creating wasteful SUV's, I'm not interested in seeing GM, Ford, and Chrysler go the way of the Studebaker and Desoto.
