Subject: Brakes locking up by themselves on 535is

We've just finished doing some brake work to my brother's 87 535is. We replaced the master cylinder from a parts car 83 733i (they looked like the same part) because power steering fluid was leaking at the master cylinder/booster joint.

Everything seemed to be going well for a short test drive after bleeding the brakes. After maybe 5 minutes of driving, we pushed down the pedal and it didn't come back up nor did the brakes release. The car just stopped and wouldn't move. The pedal was still stuck down about halfway, and we couldn't pull it back up.

So we jacked up the car, and released the pressure by loosening the bleed screws on both the front wheels. The wheels turned and the pedal came back up.

Once we started the car, the pedal depressed ITSELF like a ghost was pushing on it, and once again the brakes were locked.

Does anyone have any idea what we did wrong hooking this thing back up??

Thanks,
Kevin
