It has been a while so, I ma pulling this from my memory, Once you get the covers off for the timing belt the upper and the lower you will see a line stamped in the head at about 2:00 that will almost meet the pulley, on the face of the pulley you will notice an indintation in the peak of one of the teeth on the pulley. Head timing marks. For the crank the mark (I think) is stamped in the 1:00 position on the block, and the other mark is on on the flange that the harmonic balancer mounts against.Not quite the picture I wanted, However there is a mark on the flange the belt is wrapped around and there is a indentation in the aluminum oil covered part right above that flange. When the marks on the cam line up the marks on the crank should also, provided the belt is still in tact and the engine is still in time. If you find that the engine is still in time, then chances are that the rocker broke due to bad vavle adjustment. I know a lot of people swear by the Bentley manual, but the Hanes manual for this car is pretty good and available at most auto-parts stores.

Here is the article that I got the pictures from. It is for a e30 (a three serries from teh time your car was made). The 325 cars from that era shared the same engine as the one found in the 528e.

As far as rocker shafts they come out by removing the 4 black rubber plugs that sit under the vavle cover gasket and ten removing the little T clip at the front of the head just inside the vavle cover gasket, it has wear marks in it on this picture

94 325iC (US) 160,000 miles
98 750iL (US) 180,000 miles
01 325i (US) 30,000 miles
Now you know why I drive BMWs it is not about the money it is not about the glamor they save lives, they drive exceptionally well, and they last forever.
