tranny cooler if you have an auto... take some of the sludge out and put it in a cup to sit over night, It should separate if it is oil and water. i you are sure it is petro (gas) by the smell then my pets are still a bad head gasket/cracked head. Sometimes you can pull the spark plugs and tell what is going on, by the color/ condition of the plugs. A compression test may also give you some insight.
