The E28 5-series manual (1982-1988 528e, 533i, 535i) is the book to get.

You can find it all over ebay, amazon and other places. It covers all of the drivetrain in the E24 and lots more. The only E24 specific manual is from BMW and it is available in paper or on CD. But these assume some BMW maintenance training, and the paper version does not have specs, torque and other technical numbers. That and it is more expensive than the Bentley.
