Depending on where they break the paint from the old to the new, the older finish will normally be sanded and a bleanding reducer used. For example, if the hood is going to be painted but not the fenders, the hood paint will be shot onto the top part only of the fender, and then the clear will go down slightly farther on the fender and when compounded, will blend. The whole process being that you do not see a distinct line at the hood /fender break. It's harder to detect over an edge like the fender and much less noticable.

Heavy metal flakes are very finicky and can be susceptible by magnetic/static charge induced by paint particles moving though the air and attaching to the car. Often when I paint, I put a ground chain from the car to the floor to ground it.

If not applied correctly, metallic paint can show "zebra stripes" when the paint was not applied evenly, or to close.

You'll spend a lot for a high end job. "You get what you pay for".
