A yellow lab was added to the family last year so we sold the E30 to make room for my Dog truck, a 2000 Dodge Dakota. Between the E38 and E39, I use the 7er as my daily driver and my wife uses the 5er as hers. So the short answer, the 740iL is my favorite.

When we got it, my wife knew she wanted her own, but this car was too big. We thought about a non-iL version, but she decided on the 5er. I think she drove seven cars, the M5 and each of the 5ers in manual and automatic transmission. The M5 seemed a bit overkill for a daily driver, so she selected the 540i/6. Our timing was great as the 2003 (last of the E39) was just about to come out, and that final year the 540 had some nice extras... the M-trim package and the Style 37 M-Pars. Taking a European Delivery trip worked out great.

I kinda prefer the automatic transmission. Maybe I am getting old, maybe because the E38 only comes in the automatic transmission. If BMW would have sold the 7er in a manual in the US, I am sure I would have picked that instead, just because that seems more 'right.'

I really like the feel of a large comfy luxo-barge. Do I need the room? No. It's not a company car and I rarely have passengers.

So it's all about the style. The 740iL fits mine better, and the 540i/6 fits my wife's.

The reason why we passed the E30 on to a new family:

E39 2003 540i/6 Sterling Gray (European Delivery)
