Hello,
The engine on my 2000 318 Touring statrted making serious noises (rattling inside the engine) and loosing power. I stopped immediately, had the car towed to my regular mechanic who has said he can't sort out the problem. The head was damaged and has been repaired, but there's still something (possibly big end bearings) and it's going to take too much time to sort out.

The car has done 140,000 km and is in decent condition. There was nothing to indicate a problem, oil pressure was good, oil clean, cooling working, etc. I can't afford to go to the main dealer!

My question is, is it worth trying to sort the problem with a specialist, or just look for a secondhand engine? I think my car has the M43 (8 valve) engine, and I've found a 2002 318 engine (E42?) for about 1500 euros with 112,000 km on the clock. All the ancilliaries are with it including computer, even gearbox. Is it a straight swap? Or do I need to find the exact same engine?
