6er is enerally considered the Bentley 5-series manual. Check ebay there everywhere. You want the green covered one. The later E24 and the E28 are on the same chassis so the underpining are all the same so the manual is good.

An alternative is the BMW CD for E24 repair. It covers the full lins, but is written for a mechanic and may not be enough info at times.

The steering box is in the engine compartment and has the steering wheel shaft going into it. Follow the shaft, see the nut with the slotted bolt in the center.

As for tools, wow, since I fix my cars, I just buy what I need when I need it. The repair more than covers the cost of new tools for the project. Wrenches (gearwrench are new and everywhere and nice) sockets (quality set that can take some punishment), are the start.

In my tool boxes I have a full drawer of socket stuff, then screwdrivers, pliers, a drawer with (allen wrenches and sockets, torx sockets, nut drivers), combination wrenches, and a drawer with (drill bits, tap and die set, and torque wrenches). Then I have a the big stuff.
