I'm usually on the e38 board but we've started to get serious about X5's, Cayennes, and Tauregs. I'm a die-hard, and long-time bimmerhead, but my wife also likes the other German offerings... After hearing a total Porsche-nut, racer, tuner, and mechanic TRASH the Cayenne, we got very serious about the X5 again.

Drove a 2002 X5 4.6is, 29kmiles, CPO, Navigation, Alcantra leather/suede mesh seats. Dealer is ready to let it go for around $48k.

I know little about the 4.6 - I have the 4.4 engine in my '01 740i Sport and love it. A few questions:
1) What's the feedback on price - seems pretty reasonable to me.
2) What's the technical difference (I'm still doing research) o9n the 4.6 vs. 4.4? Besides displacement - is the suspension completely revised, what?
3) Any horror stories - resources to go to find out common problems, etc?

The car, er umm, "truck" is sapphire black on black. and the wife doesn't like the aluminum trim. Anyone ever done a full swap to the anthracite maple trim? I know, I know... expensive, but this is one of the stipulations of the purchase... Any insight?
