The 80s BMWs especially the 5 and 6 are nearly bulletproof, but for them to perform at their peak they do require a bit of maintenance. A shimmy in the front end is common, hard to resolve and usually ends up being a throw parts until it is gone sort of thing. Has something to do with the fact that these cars have such sensitive steering.

Now on to the mechanical problems. At 125,000 or so the engine is solid, but the suspensions and steering are getting tired. In that mileage range you're looking at shocks, (put lowering springs in now if you want), bushings, ball joints and stuff wearing to the point of less fun to drive. But this stuff is just shadetree mechanic stuff. Post what you got and you'll get help, suggestions and direction on where to get parts.

A friend just bought a 130k mile 86 535 and we are in the process of making it right, and his car with upgrades. He is amazed with the progress so far and is enjoying the wrenching and learning.
