Hello all:

Mario here from the West coast. I am new to this board and relative newer to the E38 world. I "upgraded" from a 1990 735iL to a 1997 740iL a couple of months. I have done my research about the E38 and have done some preventive maintenance. However, I am kind of stuck on one issue...

I have done some research on changing the filter and fluid on my transmission as it's approaching 186,000 kms with the original fluid(that's what I've been told). The green label on the tranny requires BMW Oil, Part # 8-322-940-7807 for top up. I understand that the substitute for the OE oil is the Esso LT 71141 tranny fluid. Unfortunately, I cannot locate this fluid locally. After some more research, I realized that some E38 owners have used VW oil (Part # G-052-162-A2).

Question 1: For those who have done a filter and fluid change on their E38 tranny, what fluid have you used? Is it working good for you?

Question 2: How do you which tranny is in your car (5HP24 or 5HP30)? Where is the label on the tranny? The dealer couldn't tell me over the phone thru the vin number. Thanks.

Mario
