"The motor is shot- oil idiot light flickers at idle when hot, sounds like 300K and a tired bottom end to me."

When this happens we just change the oil pressure sender located on the top rear left side of the head. Reach it from the left rear side of the open hood area. 300K is not a lot for a BMW bottom end.

"Also, I read something about upgrading the brakes by using the discs and calipers from a 7-series sedan."

Yes got to www.m535i.org and look over the FAQ & Tech Help>E24>Brakes for upgrade options and what the do where they come from and all that crap.

"If I am going to go through the motor, it isn't going back together as a stock rebuild"

Since you are at www.m535i.orgyou might as well look at the options for a normally aspirated M30 high output motor. This is 1/3rd of the way down the first page or E24 junk you are looking at. Another option is the TCD turbo system. www.turbochargingdynamics.com. Tod DeHate does a great job on this stuff.

"But who makes the best springs, shocks and sway bars for this car?"

Who knows, well have to discuss this one a bit. What do you want to do? coil overs, just replacement parts, slam it to the ground, or a nice improvement on stock without getting out of control?

Brake shimmy is the thrust arm bushings gone bad. The arm that goes back at an angle from the steering knuckle, bushing at the body fitting. Using poly is louder, harsher and a 10-25K fix, using modified (thinner) 750iL bushings is the stock upgrade.

"The car has the comfort seats rather than the sport/Recaros. I have wondered at putting later seats into it. Anyone tried this before?"

It is done all the time, try the used parts places on the link in my sig for projects.

"without having to figure it all out from scratch, then let's do it. I have the shop, the resources and the donor car. But I want to plan the entire package before I pull the first piece of trim."

Now you are just slowing us down. We have already stripped the car in our minds, sent it for paint and gotten it back. The motor is pulled and being redone as we type, the suspension and other parts are arriving and the car is coming together. It will end up sitting in the garage for a few weeks awaiting the spring thaw, but I don't know how your winters are with a Greenwood Village, CO ISP and you screen name of AZ. Finish up this bit of homework and ask a bunch of new questions. We like projects.
