Subject: Re: Alpina's M3 and Values

Actually, Alpina did make a vehicle based on the e30 M3; it was called a B6S. I believe I read a road-test --- sometime, back in the day. It wasn't a lot faster than the stock car, but it was torquier and therefore quicker. (Wanna know what the first thing Alpina did, when they modded the M3? Tossed the S14 and dropped-in a Six! --- so much for heritage.)

Anyway, I would imagine a B6S would be a pretty rare beasty, where ever it turns up. You might take a look at the wheels; an Alpina car will have Alpina wheels --- probably 16"x8", with thin straight spokes --- NOT basket-weaves. Apart from wheels, and any external stripes or writing, you might eyeball the motor. A lot of people put 6-cylinders in M3s these days, but Alpina's motor would be pretty obviously marked. There may also be a plaque of some kind on the dash, identifying it as an Alpina, possibly including a sequence number. Alpina is a considered a constructor in Germany --- not just a tuner --- and they let you know that their stuff is special.

Also, Alpina is kinda notorious for NOT supporting their older products. If you ever find an Alpina sitting --- that's why. But a REAL B6S? That would be one rare car.

As for values for 'regular' M3s . . . I guess it depends on your 'ballpark.' I haven't seen too many 'good' used M3s (I'm kinda picky about mods and other 'improvements') but a good car would probably be owned by someone who likes the thing AND has spent no-small amount of time and money keeping it nice.

So, I'll go ot on a limb here and say that . . .

1) Any clean, stock M3 with any miles at $15k would be a bargain.

2) If we're talking about a low-mileage, un-modified car with records, etc --- you could double that.

3) A federalized Evolution Car? Triple. Or more.

4) An Alpina B6S? Wouch! Assuming you could get any missing parts for it, then find a way to put it all back together? You tell me.

Good luck.
