The differences, in order of importance (my opinion) as follows:

- us ellips use a 9006 bulb; relatively poor performance; a 9012 HIR bulb can be used instead; euro ellips uses an H1 bulb

- Euro ellips have a staggered 'cutoff' --one side of the beam is higher than the other, presumably to keep from blinding oncoming drivers

- Euro ellips have the smiley cutout in the outer reflector, lets more light out

- Euro ellips have a 5 watt city light, sort of a daytime running/parking light

- Euro lights are available from both bosch and hella, bosch being slightly better because they have metal projector buckets, vs. plastic hella (this is plus if you're doing an HID retrofit.

my vote for best setup?

- Euro bosch smilies
- E46 single xenon projects
- phillips 'all-in-one' ballasts
- customer projector holder-ring to make it a bolt-in mod.
