All four doors on my '86 735i were missing the plastic sheet, which seals out wind noise and, more importantly, water from reaching the door panel and ruining it. This is a common problem from previous owners and mechanics who remove the plastic when working on the doors, but don't put it back when they're done.

A surprising amount of water can get in the door recesses from the windows and road splash, which can drip down the inside of the door panel unless you have the plastic barrier in place. In severe cases, it can also contribute to water accumulation in the floorboards and carpet.

I just used a large, thick-ply garbage bag and cut it to size, with a cutout for the door handle, taping it in place with duct tape.

The reduction in wind noise and air through the door handles is worth it by itself.
