Subject: Need Outline for v12 engine removal bmw 8 series

Hi,

I am new to the board but not new to bmw ownership, having owned two 8 series so far.

I am writing the board to see if anyone could help me with my next project before i get myself into trouble or physical danger.

I am planning to make a hybrid conversion of my bmw 8 series to V8 500 hp 550/ft. lb torque using a stroker motor.I have chosen to do so in logical fashion secondary to an aged engine, oil blow by, leaks and exhorbitant cost to rebuild and install and still end up with a 290 hp slow bmw. I asked for some help by local shops for a bid for professional removal and had quotes from 900 to 1500 dollars. Seemed steep to me for an engine i did not plan to ever reuse. I rationalized that by not taking their offers,..then the money would be better spent on driveline items and upgrades.

My quest is to quickly and efficiently remove the v12 engine and tranny from a 1991 bmw 8 series. I have all the proper hand/air tools, cherry picker, jack stands, and floor jack at my disposal. I do not have a blow torch. I do have a metal reciprocating / cutting saw.

I need someone to please tell me the most rapid way to quickly unhook the motor from the frame, the tranny from its mounts, and more importantly the sequence of events to pursue this in such a manner that the removal itself can be made efficiently and uneventfully.

I have crawled under the car...it appears Bmw 8 series are put together very well. Alot of suspension pieces, cross braces, multiple exhaust pipes etc...Seems built like a little Sherman tank and exhibits a very flush fit and finish of its external components everywhere.

Initial plans were to disconnect all batteries and leave a window down. Then remove hood, remove radiator and front fan assembly, all air boxes and hopefully be able to reach the two front motor mounts and loosen the retaining nuts. It would appear that i would perhaps undo the header bolts and exhaust pipes at 1 to three areas as they course throw the underside of car and as they are prehung from underneath the tranny bracket.

At this point I become lost for several reasons. Questionable clearance problems since exhaust manifolds and down pipes look like they might hit the frame on the way out by cherry picking. Alot of suspension pieces (etc) obscure my vision as to whether or not there are any other mounting flanges going to the mid or back one third of the engine block. I do not know if the automatic shifter handle is fly by wire or actually connected to tranny?

I cant see the ujoint holding the differential to the tranny tail end housing because,..there are a couple of transverse brackets from exhaust pipes obscuring detail in that specific cavity. I cant see any other transmission mounting brackets on first cursory exam. Furthermore, at the present time I cannot see where a wiring harness or loom comes to the back of the v12.

So, I need Help from someone who has done this before. Specifically, a quick step by step of what items should be removed first , second etc....

If worse comes to worse...I guess I could use cutting saw to cure my woes..but i suspect others on the forum may wish to use some of these parts some day.

So, If you have done this before..or if you have a service manual rendition of the proper or preferred steps...., then, that would be most helpful and appreciated.

Thanks for your help in advance....ric
