Subject: 1998 750IL Accelleration/Transmission troubles, please give your input.

Hi,

I am the owner of a 1998 750il.

I recently purchased said vehicle as a vehicle I owned years ago 97' 750il was the best vehicle I've ever owned; reliability wise too!

It was essentially a 'barn' find. Someone received the car as payment for monies owed to a construction company and it was placed in a barn for the last two years.

The vehicle has 132,000 miles and runs very, very smooth and quiet.....too quiet though really I believe it may only be running on half of its engine.

There are no check engine lights on, the abs light is on and the rough circle with the exclamation point is on on the dash.

The vehicle also doesn't feel like its shifting at all aside from drive, reverse, etc. I don't think it's responsive to any shifts even when attempted to put it into 432 under drive I think it stays all in one gear. This to my understanding typically is indicative of the car being in limp home mode, though besides the exclamation point on the dash it doesn't say that it is in limp home mode.

I've had the spark plugs done and checked the transmission fluid to make sure it has fluid, etc. We've replaced the fuel filter.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or experiences they may want to share or express to help me correct this vehicles troubles.

I smelled gas the other night while driving and later smelled the engine bay to also smell gas...the scent hasn't happened again since.

Could it be as simple as fuel pump or something like that?

Let me know what you guys think.

I appreciate any input and advice you can offer, on a budget and trying to maintain a high-line car like this is going to be the death of me if I can't at least attempt to trouble shoot my own troubles.

I'm sure I don't need to tell you most mechanics will have you replace all sorts of parts you don't need, etc.

Thanks.

Pat
