First, you know your car better than us, identify what you think are problematic areas and work on them.

I am strong believer in preventative maintenance (PM), with 325,000 and more than 12 years of ownership I am yet to get stranded on any of my trips with this car. I also get to hit 20 MPG on a highway (as high as 22 with tailwind). PM does drive upkeep costs up, but not significantly when you factor towing costs, extra fuel costs and general hassle and expense of getting stranded.

"Usual PM list"

1. Fluids - change them often, you want fresh coolant, fresh brake fluid, fresh transmission fluid. You gain most by staying on top of this.

2. Filters - transmission, fuel, steering fluid, air intake

3. Belts - thankfully we don't have to worry about timing belt (M30 has a chain), but it is still important to change them before they start making noise.

4. Coolant hoses, and fuel and brake lines - if they are original consider replacing them all, 20+ years is a good run out of any rubber part.

5. Spark plugs, water pump, disks and pads, distributor and wires, fuel pressure regulator, engine and transmission mounts, muffler rubber suspension rings - all of these are wear and tear items that you should budget to replace at some point.

6. Injectors flush, brake caliper rebuild, valve adjustment - all these may uncover "hidden" problems.

7. Suspension parts, especially front end - there is no such thing as 'usual' rattle. My E32 is dead quiet, even going over bumps, so should yours.
