they are not the problem, the metal lasts forever or at least much longer than the wear parts on the arms = bushings and the joints, and these are just wear parts which have to be replaced from time to time.
The upper steel arm is 2.23 kg = 4.91 lbs without the bush
and the lower arm made of alu is 1.42 kg
and the same made of steel is 200 grams heavier only

so the only difference in weight are 200 grams = 0.44 lbs
